22. Call of Duty – (2003)

Call of Duty is the first game in the Call of Duty franchise. It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2003. 

The game is played from a first-person perspective and showcases multiple viewpoints from the British, American, and Soviet theaters of World War II. 

Players control an infantry soldier during World War II and embark on several missions that feature a series of objectives, which the player must complete to progress. 

You’re able to save and load the game at any point, which is different from the later versions, and the game allows you to make use of a variety of authentic World War II firearms during combat. 

Call of Duty received critical acclaim upon release and won numerous “Game of the Year” awards in its first year.

Players control Private Aleksandr Sokolov, as he participates in The Battle of Stalingrad and is tasked with completing several highly dangerous and tactical missions on his own, and with Tanya Pavlovna, a female Soviet sniper. 

The game features six intertwined stories that are all based on real events from the perspective of Britsh and Soviet soldiers. 

Upon release, Finest Hour received mixed reviews from critics, with critique geared mainly toward its graphics and sound effects. 

 

20. Call of Duty 2 – (2005)

Call of Duty 2 is the second installment in the Call of Duty series. 

It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2005 for Microsoft Windows and the Xbox 360. 

In this installment, the game is set during World War II, but it’s played through the perspectives of four different soldiers from the United States Army, the British Army, and the Red Army. 

The game consists of 27 missions, split across three stories and four campaigns. It received lots of new features and upgrades, like regenerating health and a little icon that appears on your screen when a grenade is about to explode. 

Upon release, the game was praised for its graphics, sound, and regenerating health system. And, by the end of 2013, the game had sold just under six million copies. 

 

19. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One – (2005)

It’s played from a first-person perspective and is open-ended, meaning players can choose multiple paths to complete their missions. As a player, you’ll fight alongside AI-controlled allies and battle against smart and tactile enemies.

Like its predecessors, the game offers players the chance to complete several missions throughout World War II. It’s split into three campaigns: American, Canadian, and British, which each consist of fourteen levels in total.

The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, with up to six players battling it out across nine different maps. 

When the game was released, it was met with mixed reviews with reviewers criticizing it for its glitches and clumsy control scheme.

The first-person shooter was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2007 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. 

It’s the fourth main installment in the Call of Duty series and takes place in modern times, instead of its traditional World War II setting. 

Players control six different characters but take charge of British Special Air Service (SAS) recruit Sergeant, John “Soap” MacTavish, for most of the game.

Like titles before it, Call of Duty Modern Warefare 2 allows players to use a variety of weapons and while completing their missions. 

The game was met with universal acclaim and sold over 4.7 million copies in North America within its first 24 hours of release. 

 

13. Call of Duty: Black Ops – (2010)

Black Ops is the seventh title in the series and the third game to be developed by Treyarch.

In this version of Call of Duty, COD Points allow players to purchase new weapons and customize them, as well as their in-game character.

This 2015 first-person shooter was developed by Treyarch and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

It’s the twelfth entry in the Call of Duty series and the sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops II. 

The game takes place in 2065, 40 years after the events of Black Ops II. It follows a team of black ops soldiers that are tasked with tracking down an enemy terrorist and stoping his continuous reign of terror. 

The cool thing about this installment is that the characters are cybernetically enhanced, allowing them to perform various special activities that only they can do. 

Black Ops III sold over 6.6 million copies worldwide in its first week and grossed over $550 million in sales in its first three days of release. 

 

7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – (2014)

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the thirteenth installment in the Call of Duty series. It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2016. 

The game was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and continues on with its classic first-person shooter perspective. 

In this installment, the campaign focuses on the battle for the Solar System, which the Settlement Defense Front (SDF) is attempting to control. 

Players take control of Captain Nick Reyes and are able to engage in aerial combat using his transforming fighter, the Jackal. You’ll work your way through several missions, each with their own objectives, until you complete the story.  

The game was heavily criticized for being too futuristic; however, it went on to be named “Best Shooter” at E3 by Game Informer

Call of Duty: World War II is the 2017 installment in the Call of Duty series. 

The first-person shooter was developed by Sledgehammer Games and published worldwide by Activision for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. 

It’s the fourteenth primary installment in the Call of Duty series and the first title to go back to its World War II roots since Call of Duty World at War in 2008. 

The campaign is set in the European Theatre and follows a squad in the 1st Infantry division after their battles on the Western Front. The game is primarily based on the historical events of Operation Overlord. 

The PlayStation and Xbox One versions received generally positive reviews from critics; however, the P.C. version didn’t do so well and was heavily criticized.

3. Call of Duty: Warzone – (2020)

Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play Battle Royale released on March 10, 2020. 

Upon its release, Warzone was set on a large 150-200 player map, Verdansk, which was made up of lots of other smaller maps/areas used in the Modern Warfare game.

It quickly became one of the most popular games worldwide, but players gradually began to stop playing in 2021 due to the ongoing hacking issues, and lack of new features.

Since the release of Vanguard, a new map has been added to the game, and Activision has installed a new anti-cheat system in an attempt to keep players satisfied.

 

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – (2020)

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was developed by Treyarch and released on November 13, 2020.

Cold War is the fifth game in the Black Ops series and saw the return of some popular multiplayer maps, including Nuketown and Raid.

The campaign is set during the early 1980s of the Cold War, which would place it between Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 chronologically.

The weapons and attachments were slowly integrated into Warzone later on in the year.

Whilst I’m not normally a big fan of the World War II games, Vanguard adds a lot of new and improved features/sound effects which make it a lot of fun.

Blind fire and destructible maps are just two of those new features.
