The Fable series has been dormant for a while now, but it’s poised to make a serious comeback with the release of Fable 4.

However, since there is no confirmed release date yet, it seems fans have a bit of time to kill before heading back to Albion.

Fortunately, we’ve got some great recommendations for similar games you can play while waiting!

Along with that, we’ve also tried to include games with similar themes for fans of the series that enjoy the atmosphere the most.

So, if you’re ready to become a hero in a different world, here’s our list of the 10 best games like Fable:

10. Kynseed

Kicking off our list, we have a game like Harvest Moon that takes place in a large sandbox fantasy world.

In Kynseed, players get to lead any life they want, and it spans generations, meaning that when your first character passes away, their children will carry on the legacy!

Throughout the lives of your characters, you can start a family, build a farm, open a shop, or explore the world with very few limitations.

While on adventures, you can explore dangerous regions and battle dark fairytale creatures while unearthing lore about the world of Quill.

There are also NPCs to interact and build relationships with, and they will remember your actions, both good and bad.

Oh, and you can also purchase strange artifacts that can do anything from aiding you in battles to messing with the fabric of the world!

You can even pass your skills and powers down to your children so that, over time, your lineage will grow stronger and more influential.

9. Risen

This action RPG is the first title in the Risen series, and it debuted in 2009 but was ported to the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2023.

Risen follows an unnamed player character on their adventures on an island ruled by a ruthless High Inquisitor.

It is here that the High Inquisitor is looking for a way to destroy the Titans, ancient destructive beings that have been unwittingly unleashed.

At the start of the game, players will have access to much of the island; however, paths leading further in will be blocked by high-level creatures.

There are three melee types to choose from and two ranged types, each with five corresponding weapons skills.

While there are no character classes, you can’t learn everything right off the bat. For instance, to use magic, you’ll need to join the mages.

That said, the best sword trainer is a bandit, and if you’ve already joined the mages, he will refuse to train you.

There is a lot you’ll have to manage in Risen if you want to become the ultimate hero, and there’s a ton of replayability thanks to this.

8. The Outer Worlds

Published by Obsidian Entertainment in 2019, this action RPG is set in an alternate future ruled by megacorporations.

At the start of the game, players are awakened by a mad scientist and tasked with finding resources to revive colonists trapped in cryosleep.

The player is then jettisoned onto the planet of Terra 2, but things don’t exactly go according to play.

Like Fallout: New Vegas, one of the best Fallout games, which was also created by Obsidian, this game is packed with choices.

In this game, players are free to customize their character’s skills and recruit companions that come with their own unique abilities.

Weapons can also be modified with different ammo types and element damage effects to make them more effective against different targets.

There is also a time dilation state that players can use to slow down time to line up better shots or see how much health an enemy has.

Like Fable, there is also plenty of dark humor to be found in The Outer Worlds that makes exploring the world entertaining and hilarious.

7. Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning

Next up, we have one of the best games like The Witcher 3, that is sure to appeal to any Fable fan.

Released in 2012, The Reckoning follows the Fateless One, who was resurrected and freed from the bonds of fate.

As the Fateless One, it is up to players to fight to save the mortal races while exploring the large open world of Amalur.

The play style is completely customizable, using a variety of weapons, passive enchantments, and unlockable skills.

Additionally, the different races you can choose come with their own abilities and boosts that can alter gameplay.

All combat is real-time, and it revolves around the play using two equippable weapons and active skills.

There are also passive skills that are not combat-related but instead offer benefits to crafting or speech.

If you missed out on this game when it first came out, don’t worry because it was recently remastered for modern consoles.

In 2020 it was re-released for the PS4 and Xbox One, followed by the Nintendo Switch a year later.

6. Overlord 2

Overlord 2 was released in 200 as an action RPG that gives players control of a mysterious warrior whose goal is to conquer or destroy the land.

To achieve this, players are given control of small goblin creatures called Minions that can be used to defeat civilizations.

There are four different types of minions that are unlocked throughout the game, but they won’t be doing all of the work.

Players can also participate in combat as the Overlord, using a variety of weapons and armor that gradually become available.

At some points, the Overlord can assume direct control of the strongest minion and use it to lead the rest through battle.

Players will also have to make choices throughout the game to either pursue destruction or domination.

The choices you make impact not only the story but the appearance and available powers of the Overlord.

Along with the single-player campaign, there are multiplayer modes, where players will have to compete against or work with others.

5. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition was released in 2014 as the third installment in the popular BioWare franchise.

In this game, players can select one of four races to play, as well as three distinct classes, before being tossed into the civil unrest of Thedas.

With a breach between reality and the world of spirits threatening to tear the world apart, it’s up to players to fix everything.

Inquisition is a semi-open world with several huge areas for players to explore with their companions.

However, some campaigns can leave if you anger them enough, so you’ll want to try and stay in their good graces!

Some can also be romanced, though some require a specific gender or race in order for that path to be open.

There is also a cloud-based story creator that allows players to select the state of the world without having to import a completed save.

Along with being one of the best games like World of Warcraft, in terms of lore and worldbuilding, Inquisition is also perfect for Fable fans.

This game gives players a lot of freedom to make various choices, for better or for worse, and the story is also incredibly engaging.

Plus, the next game, Dreadwolf, won’t be released until at least 2024, so you have plenty of time to get caught up!

4. Jade Empire

Jade Empire is another BioWare game that was released in 2055 as an action RPG inspired by Chinese mythology.

In this game, players control the last remaining Spirit Monk on a mission to save their tutor, Master Li, and stop the corrupt Emperor.

While the narrative is fairly linear, it is also filled with moral choices that players will have to make, which will affect things going forward.

The morality system in this game was reused from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, so it works extremely well.

In the beginning, there are six pre-set character archetypes to choose from; three male and three female.

Each of these has different statistics, such as Chi, Focus, and Health, which make them better for different playstyles.

Exploration takes place in different hub-like environments, similar to the first Fable game, and quests can be acquired from various NPCs.

Jade Empire is easily one of the best original Xbox games and one that every Fable fan should check out!

3. Torchlight 2

Originally released in 2012, Torch Light 2 has seen been ported to the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2019.

This action RPG dungeon crawler is set in a fantasy world where players have to track the Alchemist who’s destroyed the town of Torchlight.

Starting off, players can select one of four classes, each of which has its own unique abilities and skills.

Players can also customize the appearance of their character and mix and match builds to any play style.

Like the original game in the series, this sequel features a ton of randomly generated dungeons that players can explore.

What makes this game really stand out is its support for modding, which includes the GUTS editor that can alter the game’s content.

Support for mod distribution was also added to the Steam Workshop, so players can easily add in whatever they want!

This gives Torchlight 2 a ton of replayability, so that even when you beat it the first time, you’ll want to dive right back in.

2. The Witcher 3

Originally released in 2015, The Witcher 3 is an open-world game set in a world based on Slavic mythology.

Like previous games, this one follows the story of monster hunter Geralt of Rivia as he looks for his adoptive daughter, Ciri.

Throughout the game, players will go toe to toe with many dangerous monsters using Geralt’s swords and witcher abilities.

There are technically 36 different endings depending on the different choices the players can make throughout the game.

Witcher 3 also has an advanced AI system and dynamic environments that can affect the creatures you come in contact with.

For example, werewolves will become more powerful on nights when there is a full moon, while they’ll be weaker during the day.

Outside of combat, players can engage in other activities such as playing cards, horse racing, or boxing. Sadly, there is no chicken kicking.

Best of all, this game was re-released for next-gen consoles with improved graphics, additional content from mods, outfits, and a quest inspired by the TV series.

If you’re a fan of the Fable Franchise and haven’t checked out The Witcher 3 yet, you’re definitely missing out!

1. Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

While we’ve covered the best games like Skyrim, this game is also our choice as the best alternative to Fable.

At this point, everyone has probably played, or at least heard of, this rather infamous game that has been going strong for over a decade.

Having received a remaster, a VR version, an Anniversary edition, and a version for Alexa, Skyrim is by far one of the most popular games ever made.

Like Fable, it gives players the ability to do good for the people of Skyrim as the Dragonborn or go around murdering whole villages just because.

While you can’t kick chickens — though we’re sure there’s a mod for that — players do often kill them because they can turn you in for committing crimes!

In this game, players can choose one of 10 races to play as and customize their skills, which level up as they’re used.

Skyrim is basically the ultimate sandbox, because you can really do whatever you want, even if that means avoiding the main story entirely.

Plus, since mods are even supported on consoles, the replayability is basically endless, which we suppose is why Bethesda isn’t rushing Elder Scrolls VI.

In any case, if you’ve managed to avoid playing Skyrim so far, we commend your efforts but highly recommend finally checking it out!
