OSRS Farming Guide

Farming is a skill that most people put off because it seems complex at first glance.

However, the process doesn’t have to be complicated, and we’ve created this in-depth farming guide to make it easier.

While it will still take a bit of time to max out, it is well worth the effort for the benefits this skill can provide.

OSRS Farming Guide: Level 1-99

In this OSRS farming guide, we are going to be covering everything you need to know about how to max out your skill.

This includes all of the tips and tricks you need to know, the quests you can complete for farming XP, and different leveling techniques you can use.

Although farming is still one of the slowest skills to max out, it is well worth the effort, especially since you can level other skills alongside it.

Why Train Farming In OSRS?

There are a few notable reasons why you would want to level up your farming skill in Old School Runescape.

Firstly, it is an excellent way to make a passive income, and there are many herbs, trees, and bushes that can give you a decent profit.

As you increase your farming level, you will also gain access to more valuable crops and plants, which can gain you even more money.

If you are leveling herblore, farming is also extremely helpful, as you can grow the ingredients you need and save money.

There are also a number of quests that require varying levels of farming, so you’ll need to train if you want to complete them.

Some of the most important quests include Garden of Death, Garden of Tranquility, Enlightened Journey, and Song of the Elves.

Things To know

Before we start looking at how you can advance your farming skill, let’s take a look at what you need to know about farming.

This skill revolves entirely around planting seeds and harvesting crops ranging from veggies and herbs to cacti and mushrooms.

Every crop that you plant will have its own set of growth cycles that continue even when you are logged off.

Because of this, you can plant what you need and rapidly gain XP without needing a lot of in-game time.

There are also a number of important tools that you will need, including:

  • A rake
  • A spade
  • A watering can
  • A seed dribbler
  • A gardening trowel
  • Baskets
  • Empty sacks
  • Plant pots
  • Plant cures

However, the spade is the most important tool on this list, as it is used for harvesting and clearing away dead crops.

We would recommend grabbing a seed dribbler, rake, and watering can before getting started.

You can also use compost, which can be bought from farming shops, to increase your crop yield and avoid disease.

Tips & Tricks

Now, let’s take a quick look at some of the most important tips and tricks you can use to make leveling as easy as possible.

One of the best things you can do is grab the farmer’s outfit, which can be gained from the Tithe Farm minigame.

However, to gain the full outfit, you will need 400 reward points from the minigame, which can take between 4-8 hours.

That said, it will provide a 2.5% farming XP boost, which can help you level a bit faster.

There are also garden pies, one of the best healing foods in OSRS, that also provides a +3 boost to your farming skill.

Similarly, you can drink mature cider to gain a temporary +2 boost to farming.

This can be useful if you’re close to unlocking a new farming method and want to grab it earlier.

Recommended Quests For Farming Experience

If you want to gain some farming experience while questing, you’re in luck!

There are plenty of quests in Old School Runescape that provide farming experience once completed.

However, keep in mind that some of these quests will come with additional requirements that you will have to meet before you can begin.

You will also need to complete Mourning’s End Part II, Making History, and all of their required quests in order to begin.

Once you meet these requirements, you can speak with Edmond in his home in East Ardougne, just north of the Flying Horse Inn.

Upon completion, this quest provides 40k experience in all of the required skills mentioned above.

It also grants you access to Prifddinas, Trahaearn Mine, The Gunatlet, and Iorwerth Dungeon.

Additionally, after this quest, you will be able to make crystal tools, armor, and weapons, along with divine potions.

Fastest Method

If you want to get to level 99 farming in OSRS, you’re going to have to put in quite a bit of work.

However, there is a method for leveling up quickly, though it does involve undertaking a few quests, which do have additional requirements.

In this segment, we’re going to walk you through this method step-by-step, but you can always combine it with the alternative methods below!

Levels 1-9: Goblin Generals Quest

OSRS Farming Guide Goblin Generals Quest

Starting at level 1, you should complete the quest Goblin Generals, which will provide you with 1k farming experience.

However, this quest requires you to complete Goblin Diplomacy and Cook’s Assistant before it will be available.

While that sounds like a lot of work, it will raise your farming level from 1 to 9 instantly, making it well worth it.

Levels 9-20: Fairy Tale Part I

OSRS Farming Guide Fairytale I Quest

Once you’re at level 9, you can complete Fairy Tale Part I, which will provide 3.5k experience.

Like the previous quest, you will also have to complete a few other quests before this one becomes available.

In this case, you will have to complete Lost City, Nature Spirit, The Restless Ghost, and Priest in Peril.

However, finishing Fairy Tale Part I will immediately boost you up to farming level 20, saving you a lot of grinding.

Levels 20-27: The Forgettable Tale Quest

OSRS Farming Guide Forgettable Tale Quest

At level 20, you should take on The Forgettable Tale Quest, which requires prior completion of The Giant Dwarf and Fishing Contest.

You will also need 22 cooking, 16 firemaking, 33 magic, 14 thieving, and 10 fishing to complete it.

If you need help with these skills, you can check out our OSRS 1-99 cooking guide, along with our other OSRS guides, to give yourself a hand.

Levels 27-30: Garden of Tranquility

OSRS Farming Guide Garden of Tranquility Quest

Once you hit level 27 after completing The Forgettable Tale, you can start the Garden of Tranquility.

This quest requires you to have 20 crafting and 25 thriving, as well as previously completing the Creature of Fenkenstrain quest.

Once this quest is complete, you will receive 5k farming XP, boosting your level instantly to 30.

Levels 30-33: My Arms Big Adventure

OSRS Farming Guide My Arms Big Adventure Quest

At this point, you can start My Arms Big Adventure, which requires 31 herblore and 15 agility to complete.

You will also need to finish Eadgar’s Ruse, Druidic Ritual, Troll Stronghold, and Death Plateau beforehand.

If you need help boosting your agility, you can check out our OSRS 1-99 agility guide to learn how to advance it quickly.

After this quest, you will hit level 33 and be ready to progress onto Tree Runs, which will get you through to level 99.

Levels 33-45: Willow Tree Runs

OSRS Farming Guide Willow Tree Runs

While you can start doing tree runs at level 15, for this guide, we’ve chosen to hold off until level 33, when willow trees become available.

However, if you want to do tree runs while questing, you absolutely can in order to gain even more XP.

At this level, you will want to focus on willow trees, planting saplings, and checking them regularly for experience.

There are six patches throughout the world that you can use, though some will need to be unlocked.

Willow trees will take 3 hours and 40 minutes to grow, so make sure to note the time you plant them so you can farm them efficiently.

With these trees, you can earn roughly 1k XP per hour, assuming you are doing at least 2 tree runs every day.

Levels 45-60: Maple Tree Runs

OSRS Farming Guide Maple Tree Runs

At level 45, you can start planting maple trees to use for tree runs, and each will have a growth time of 5 hours and 20 minutes.

You will need 62 of these tree runs in order to reach level 60, earning roughly 3.4k XP per hour.

While it will still take a while, you can also supplement your XP income by planting additional crops in other locations.

Levels 60-75: Yew Tree Runs

OSRS Farming Guide Yew Tree Runs

Once you hit level 60, you can start using Yew trees during your tree runs, which will take 6 hours and 40 minutes to grow.

These will provide 7.1k farming XP per hour, and you will need to make 131 tree runs in order to hit level 75.

However, you could make things quicker if you’re able to do more than two tree runs per day.

Levels 75-99: Magic Tree Runs

OSRS Farming Guide Magic Tree Runs

When you make it to level 75, you will be in the home stretch and can now start using magic trees during your runs!

These will provide 13k Xp per hour, and you will need to complete roughly 850 runs in order to max out your farming skill.

Magic trees take 8 hours to grow, so we would recommend planting them before you go to sleep and then making your runs in the morning for efficiency!

Alternative Method

If you want to maximize the XP you are earning, there are some alternative methods you can use.

These methods can be combined with the method above or used to substitute some of the steps.

Levels 27-99: Fruit Tree Runs

At level 27, you will unlock fruit trees which you can combine with your tree runs for additional XP.

However, these trees aren’t included in the fastest method because they take 16 hours to grow.

Despite this, they can be a great way to gain additional XP and boost your level much more quickly.

Here are the different types of fruit trees, along with the levels you should plant them:

  • Apple Trees: Levels 27-33
  • Banana Trees: Levels 33-39
  • Orange Trees: Levels 39-42
  • Curry Trees: Levels 42-51
  • Pineapple Trees: Levels 51-57
  • Papaya Trees: Levels 57-68
  • Palm Trees: Levels 68-81
  • Dragonfruit Trees: Levels 81-99

Additionally, because pineapple and papaya trees are the least expensive fruit trees, you can always stick with them until level 99 to save money.

Either way, planting these trees and using them on your tree runs can be a great way to earn bonus XP!

Levels 35-99: Hardwood Trees

Another method you can use during tree runs is planting hardwood trees, which can be planted only on Fossil Island after completing the Bone Voyage quest.

There are three hardwood tree patches there, and we would recommend using them all for maximum XP gains.

Hardwood trees have long growth times, with mahogany taking three days, 13 hours, and 20 minutes to complete, but offer 100k XP each week.

Likewise, teak trees have a growth cycle of 2 days, 17 hours, and 20 minutes but can earn you 60K XP per week, just a bit less than mahogany.

You should plant teak trees from levels 35-55 during your tree runs before switching to mahogany trees from level 55 until 99.

By doing this, you can earn one of the best skillcapes in OSRS even faster and show off your accomplishment to everyone else!

Summary

We hope you’ve enjoyed our OSRS farming guide and learned everything you need in order to max out your skill.

While farming isn’t the easiest skill to level up, the good thing is that most of the time, you’ll be waiting instead of mindlessly grinding.

Plus, once you’ve maxed out farming, you can use it to make yourself some decent coin or help yourself level other skills like herblore!
