The first open world PS4 game on our list is Need for Speed Heat.
NFS Heat is a racing game that is the twenty-fourth installment in the Need for Speed series, and was released to celebrate the series 25th anniversary.
Set in Palm City, a fictional version of Miami, Florida, players are able to switch between day and night whilst racing around the city taking part in both, sanctioned and illegal street races.
As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more races and events to participate in.
The game was developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts, and released on the PS4 on November 8, 2019.
Need for Speed Heat won the award for “Game Franchise Racing” at the NAVGTR Awards.
19. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
The next open world PS4 game on our list is Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Developed by Warhorse Studios and published by Deep Silver, on the Playstation 4 in 2018, Kingdom Come is an action role-playing PlayStation game set in the Medieval Kingdom of Bohemia, a state within the Roman Empire.
The game is set in 1403, and players are in control of Henry, the son of a blacksmith, whose father was murdered in a massacre ordered by King Sigismund Cuman.
Looking to seek revenge for his father’s murder, Henry joins the resistance and also tries to restore Bohemias rightful king, Wenceslaus IV.
The game received mainly positive reviews upon release and won a number of awards, such as “Game of the Year” at the Dare to Game: Awards 2018.
18. Mad Max
Mad Max is an action-adventure video that was developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
The game is based on the Mad Max franchise and was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2015.
Players control “Max Rockatansky” as he works his way through the wasteland on a quest to reach the “Plains of Silence”, where he hopes to find peace.
Along the way, Max has to do battle with a gang of raiders, called the “Scabrous Scrotus”, and continue building and upgrading his vehicle, the “Magnum Opus”.
Mad Max became the eighth best selling retail game in the United States in 2015 and was the second best-selling game in the United Kingdom in its first week of release!
17. Saints Row 4
Coming in at number seventeen is Saints Row 4.
This PS4 action-adventure game was released in 2013, developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver.
In the game, players are in control of the leader of the “3rd Street Saints”, the worlds most powerful street gang and organisation.
However, after an alien invasion takes place, they must fend them off using their new superpowers gained from becoming president of the United States.
It’s the fourth game in the Saints Row series, and upon release, received positive reviews from critics.
A sequel was announced by Volition in 2019, so, we can more than likely expect to see it on the PS5!
16. Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition is the third game in the Dragon Age series, and is the sequel to Dragon Age: Origins.
It’s an action role-playing game that was released worldwide on the PS4 in November 2014.
Following a player character, known as the “Inquisitor”, players embark on a quest to settle the civil unrest in Thedas, whilst trying to close a strange “Breach” in the sky, which is unleashing deadly demons into the world.
Dragon Age: Inquisition received a very positive response upon release, with critics praising the games story, detailed environments, soundtrack and engaging combat.
It was developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts (EA).
15. Dying Light
Dying Light is an open world survival horror action-adventure video game played in the first-person perspective.
The game was developed by Techland, published by Warner Bros and released on the PlayStation 4 in January 2015.
Dying Light follows “Kyle Crane”, an undercover agent who’s sent to infiltrate Harran, a quarantined city.
However, the city is infested with zombies, so Kyle has to use his Parkour skills and some kick-ass weapons to fight them off and continue on with his mission.
Upon release, the game received positive reviews and was the best selling game of the month.
Approximately 1.2 million people were playing Day Light within its first week of release!
14. Borderlands 2
As the name suggest, Borderlands “2” is the sequel to 2009’s Borderlands.
It’s a first-person shooter action role-playing game that was developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games.
The game allows players to control one of four to six “Vault Hunters”, or treasure seekers, on the planet, Pandora.
The Vault Hunters are on a quest to find an interesting alien vault, whilst liberating Pandora from “Handsome Jack”.
Upon release, in 2014, the game received critical acclaim and became a massive commercial success.
It became 2k’s best-selling title, as it sold over 13 million copies worldwide!
13. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The next open world PS4 game on our list is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
The Phantom Pain is the ninth instalment in the Metal Gear series and was released on the PlayStation 4 on September 1, 2015.
This time around, the game is set in 1984, which is nine years after the events of Ground Zeros, and follows “Venom Snake” as he travels back to Afghanistan to seek revenge on the people that killed his forces and almost killed him in the process!
The Phantom Pain received critical acclaim and was described by critics as one of the greatest stealth games of all time.
It also won many “Game of the Year” awards in 2015 at a number of different award ceremonies.
12. Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 is a first-person shooter video game that was released on the PlayStation 4 in 2018, and, is the successor to 2014’s Far Cry 4.
The fifth main instalment in the series was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto, and published by Ubisoft.
As a player, you’ll take control of a junior deputy whos trapped inside Hope County, a fictional region of Montana, United States. You’ll join the resistance in the fight to bring down Joseph Seed, the leader of the doomsday cult that’s taken control of the county.
Upon release, Far Cry 5 was met with a positive response from critics and became a commercial success, generating over $310 million in its first week of sales, making it the fastest-selling title in the franchise!
11. Marvel’s Spider-Man
Exclusive only to the Playstation 4, Marvel’s Spider-Man is an action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and released on September 7, 2018.
The game is based on the Marvel Comic superhero, Spider-Man, and follows the superhero as he tries to save New York City from a deadly virus, threatened to be released by super-human crime lord, Mr Negative.

10. Death Stranding
Developed by Kojima Productions, Death Stranding was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 in November 2019.
Death Stranding is an action-adventure game set in the United States, after the result of the Death Stranding.
The aftermath allowed destructive creatures from between life and death to walk the planet. Players control a local courier, Sam Porter Bridges, as he tries to reconnect isolated colonies using a wireless communications network, whilst keeping himself alive.
The PS4 game was nominated for a number of awards and won “Best Game Direction” at The Game Awards 2019.
9. Watch Dogs 2
Released for the PlayStation 4 in 2016, Watch Dogs 2 is the sequel to 2014’s Watch Dogs.
It was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft.
The game is played in a third-person perspective and players can navigate their way around its open world, either by foot or vehicle, which is set in the fictional version of the San Francisco Bay Area.
You’ll be in control of Marcus Hollaway, a hacker from the notorious hacker group “DedSec”, as he tries to take down the city’s advanced surveillance system. As you progress through the game, you’ll increase DedSec’s follower count and complete several missions and assignments.
When the game was released, it was met with positive criticism and became the second-best-selling retail game in the United Kingdom in its week of release!
8. Assassin’s Creed Origins
Another Ubisoft creation, Assassin’s Creed Origins is the tenth major instalment in the Assassin’s Creed series.
It follows on from the 2015 Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and was released on the PlayStation 4 on October 27, 2017.
The game is set in Ancient Egypt and recalls the fictional history of some real-world events. It follows the story of Beyak, a Medjay, that is on a mission to unite the two ancient brotherhoods of assassins that have been going on for centuries.
When Origins was released, it received positive reviews from critics and won “Best Console Game (PlayStation 4) ” at the Gamescon 2017 awards.

This action role-playing PlayStation 4 game is the fifth major instalment in the Fallout series and was released to the world on November 10, 2015.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic open world environment, in the city of Boston and the surrounding region, known as “The Commonwealth”. Players gain control of a character known as the “Sole Survivor”, and go on a quest to find his missing child in the chaos of “The Commonwealth”.
After release, Fallout 4 received huge praise from critics and was regarded as a commercial and critical success, as it generated over $750 million within the first twenty-four hours of its launch.

Developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was released on the PlayStation 4 on October 5, 2018.
This time around, the plot tells a fictional history of the war between Sparta and Athens. As a player, you’ll control either a male or female mercenary as they try to reunite their family, which means they end up fighting for both sides.
The open world game was met with positive reviews and picked up an award for “Best Artistic Design” at the Titanium Awards 2018.
5. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Kicking off our top five is the immensely popular, Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Developed by Guerilla Games and published by Sony Interactive, Zero Dawn was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017.
The plot follows a hunter called “Aloy”, who lives in a world overrun by machines, and who’s on a mission to uncover her past. As Aloy, you’ll use a range of weapons and abilities to defend yourself from the machines, and you’ll be able to explore the open world to find new quests.
Praised by critics for its open world, story, visuals and combat, Zero Dawn won numerous awards and sold in excess of 10 million units by February 2019.
4. Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game for the Playstation 4 that can be played from either a first-person or third-person perspective.
It was developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It’s the first main entry in the series since 2008 and was released in 2013.
The game is set in the fictional state of San Andreas, which is based on Southern California, and players get to control three criminals as they try and evade the government and powerful crime figures, whilst committing heists.

3. Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (Remastered)
The fifth instalment in the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim was released on the PlayStation 4 as a remastered edition in October 2016.
The action role-playing video game was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks.
As a player of Skyrim, you’ll be in control of the Dragonborn and quested to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, who’s prophesied to destroy the world. Staying true to open world, you’ll be allowed to roam as freely as you please, completing quests and developing skills as you go.
Within two days of the game being released, 3.4 million physical copies were sold worldwide.

Having waited eight years for the prequel to Red Dead Redemption, RDR 2 is set in 1899 in the fictional Midwest. It follows outlaw, Arthur Morgan, as he tries to deal with the decline of the midwest and keep himself alive from the threat of rival gangs and government forces.
It’s presented in both, a first and third-person perspective and players are free to roam around the open world environment as they please.

Released in 2015, for the PlayStation 4, Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt. The game is based on the series of fantasy novels, of the same name, by Andrezj Sapkowski.
It’s played in an open world third-person perspective and players are in control of Geralt of Rivia, a protagonist and monster hunter, (also known as a Witcher) that’s on a mission to find his missing adopted daughter before an otherworldly force get their hands on her.
The game received critical acclaim, with critics praising its gameplay, narrative, world design and visuals.
The Witcher 3 has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made and has won numerous Game of the Year awards.
