Thankfully, we’ve got some great recommendations for co-op games that you’ll absolutely love.

The 10 Best Games Like A Way Out

All the games we’ve chosen have been ranked by their popularity, gameplay, and sales, so you can easily find your next favorite.

So, gather your friends and check out our list of the 10 best games like A Way Out:

10. Payday 2

Games Like A Way Out Payday 2

Kicking off our list, we have Payday 2, a co-op first-person shooter that was published in 2013.

Despite being a decade old, this game remains incredibly popular, thanks to the best Payday 2 mods, which keeps gameplay fresh.

This game revolves around the Payday gang and their heist-spree set in Washington, D.C., and players can control any of the gang’s 22 members.

Players can take part in a number of crimes, including robbing banks, shops, and armored cars. This game also allows you to produce and sell drugs.

While players can play by themselves, Payday 2 is much more fun with friends, and in multiplayer, you can have up to three other players join your crime spree.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to play this game for yourself, now is the perfect time since Payday 3 is slated for release in September 2023!

9. Unravel Two

Games Like A Way Out Unravel Two

Unravel Two is a very unique two-player game, though it is only available for local co-op, meaning you can’t play with friends online.

Released in 2018, this game gives players control of two anthropomorphic yarn creatures who must work together to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.

Some of the puzzles are incredibly inventive, and they really force you to have to communicate and think outside of the box.

The story in this game is also worth mentioning, as it has a couple of surprisingly dark moments.

Don’t worry, though, because this isn’t a game you’ll need a box of tissues for, and it overall has a satisfying and happy conclusion!

We will warn you that the gameplay can be tough at times. However, this can be perfect for fans of A Way Out who’ve wanted a harder challenge!

A bit similar to the best games like Ori and the Blind Forest, Unravel Two will really test just how well you and your friends can collaborate.

8. We Were Here

Games Like A Way Out We Were Here

This co-op adventure game was released in 2017, and it’s since been followed up by We Were Here Too, We Were Here Together, and We Were Here Forever.

In this game, the first in the series, two players enter a frozen wasteland and become lost in an abandoned castle.

The only thing keeping players in contact is a walkie-talkie, which is used to help solve different puzzles.

When the game starts off, player one will be trapped in a confined area while the second player tries to find them.

However, you will really have to brush up on your communication skills because you’ll have nothing but your voice to help each other out!

We Were Here is filled with challenging gameplay that will really test both your puzzle-solving skills and how well you and your friends can communicate.

Easily one of the best multiplayer PS5 games, we highly recommend giving this game a try for yourself!

7. Sea Of Thieves

Games Like A Way Out Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves was released in 2018, and since then, it has become the go-to co-op game for many gamers and their friends.

Similar to the best games like Subnautica, Sea of Thieves gives players a lot of freedom to do what they way.

This game allows players to become pirates and take on jobs from different trading companies, though, of course, you can choose to attack other ships and steal treasure instead!

All gameplay takes place in a shared world, so players will always encounter others during their adventures.

You can choose to form alliances with other players or man your own galleon with three of your friends assuming different roles.

Since the world is completely open, you can also choose to explore wherever you want, gather valuable resources, find ghost fleets, or set up shop in a tavern as a bard.

Like Unravel Two, you can totally play this game on your own, but it is much more fun if you’re able to bring friends along.

Plus, nothing beats starting your own ragtag pirate crew and taking to the high seas with your mates!

6. Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime

Games Like A Way Out Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime

Along with being one of the best games like It Takes Two, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a creative shooter that’s perfect for A Way Out fans.

Released in 2015, this game can be played with up to four people, and the goal is to pilot a spaceship that contains a variety of stations.

Different players will have to man these stations, each of which manages something different, such as the shield, engine, cannon, and map.

Throughout the game, players will have to navigate with the ship while racing to attack enemies and mitigate incoming damage.

There are four main campaigns to complete, each of which includes four levels culminating in a boss fight.

During main levels, players will typically have to locate and rescue a variety of creatures, and the more you save, the more effective the ship will become.

Loves in a Dangerous Spacetime is a delightful game, and it definitely requires a ton of teamwork to make it to the end!

5. The Escapists 2

Games Like A Way Out The Escapists 2

Released in 2017, The Escapists 2 is a strategy RPG where players take control of an inmate while playing from a top-down perspective.

Up to four players, either locally or online, have to closely follow the prison’s schedule while trying to come up with an escape plan.

However, missing routines will result in heightened levels of security, meaning more patrols and potentially even a total lockdown.

Players can craft a variety of items, including dummies, tasers, and shovels, to help in the escape.

Unfortunately, if these items are found, players will be sent to solitary confinement, and everything will be confiscated.

Although you could play this game solo, there are some specific endings that require all four players to unlock.

Plus, this game has a ton of humor that makes it absolutely hilarious to play with your friends when you need a good laugh.

The Escapists 2 is certainly one of the best PS4 games like A Way Out, especially since it’s a prison escape game.

4. Portal 2

Games Like A Way Out Portal 2

Since being released in 2011, Portal 2 has become a classic game to play with friends, and it was even ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2022.

While the single-player mode was designed so that it wouldn’t frustrate players, co-op levels were created to require communication and coordination.

The puzzles you’ll tackle in co-op mode are much more difficult than the ones in solo, and some are even timed.

Every puzzle requires action from both players, meaning no one will ever be sitting on the sidelines not pulling their weight!

For example, some levels are designed so that one player has to manipulate the portals or controls so that the other can cross the room.

Best of all, Portal 2 was designed so that new players could jump in without a huge learning curve.

This means that even if the only thing you know about Portal is that the cake is a lie, you can still load up this game and have fun.

However, be prepared to think outside of the box because the puzzle-solving in this game can be incredibly tricky!

That said, Portal 2 is one of the best multiplayer games of all time, and we highly recommend checking it out!

3. Overcooked 2

Games Like A Way Out Overcooked 2

Overcooked is a series designed for teamwork, but don’t let its colorful poppy graphics fool you; this game gets intense!

As a cooking simulator, the goal of this game is for up to four players to work cooperatively to make orders in increasingly ridiculous restaurants.

Players will have to collaborate to grab, chop, cook, and combine ingredients to create dishes and then serve them. Oh, and you also have to wash the dishes that come back!

All of this has to happen quickly in order to progress in the game, but this is easier said than done when everyone’s bumping into each other!

If that wasn’t tough enough, some restaurants will also have obstacles, such as moving floors to make cooking even more difficult.

While this is one of the best Xbox One split-screen games, it also has online multiplayer that allows you to connect with friends anywhere.

Overcooked 2 definitely ups the ante when compared to its predecessor, and some levels have extremely challenging gameplay.

You’ll really have to work closely together with your friends if you want to make it through all of the most difficult and crazy restaurants!

2. Monaco: What’s Yours Is Mine

Games Like A Way Out Monaco What's Yours Is Mine

Released in 2013, this stealth game can be played either alone or with up to three of your friends.

Players can choose from one of eight characters, each of which comes with their own unique skills and abilities.

Some options players can pick include The Cleaner, The Locksmith, The Hacker, and the Lookout.

Monaco is played from a top-down perspective, and it revolves around completing increasingly difficult heists and robberies.

While levels can be completed with any character, some do better than others in certain missions.

The characters you choose will also impact your strategy, since you’ll have to rely on specific skills to succeed.

There are also various items, such as C4 explosives and smoke bombs, that can be found during missions and used.

However, these items aren’t shared in co-op, so the person who picks them up will be the only one who can use them.

Outside of the heists, there are also PvP maps that players can take part in and a zombie mode to make things even more difficult.

Although you can technically play through the main story alone, the co-op really is this game’s strong point, and we definitely recommend checking it out!

1. It Takes Two

Games Like A Way Out It Takes Two

Taking our number one spot is one of the best online games to play with friends, and it was released in 2021 by Hazelight Studios, the creators of A Way Out.

Unlike other games with a solo mode, It Takes Two lives up to its name by requiring two players for everything.

This action-adventure game was designed for split-screen play, but it can also be played online if you can’t get a friend to come over.

The plot warrants mentioning because it tells a fantastic story about a married couple planning on getting a divorce.

However, they soon find themselves trapped in the bodies of their daughter’s dolls and have to work together in order to reach her.

As the pair travel together, they gradually come to remember all of the good times they’ve shared, as well as the things that brought them together in the first place.

Every progressive obstacle is designed to include more collaboration, and the game ends on an incredibly hopeful and inspiring note.

It Takes Two is a wholesome game in every way, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great co-op experience!
