Psychic-Type Pokemon Weaknesses and Strengths

Psychic-type Pokémon have been around since Generation I but have since had their weaknesses and resistances updated.

These Pokémon can be difficult to take down if you don’t know how to counter them, which is why we’ve created this handy guide.

By the end of this article, you will know exactly how to use the weaknesses of this type to your advantage while avoiding what they are resistant against!

Psychic Type Pokémon Weaknesses

If you’ve found yourself wondering, “What are Psychic-type Pokémon weak against?” while fighting an Abra, you’re not alone.

These Pokémon, despite being the sixth most common type in the series, are a bit unusual, so it can be tough to remember what to use against them.

Psychic types have three weaknesses, which include:

  • Bug
  • Dark
  • Ghost

Initially, this type was only weak to Bug-type attacks, but since Generation II, Dark and Ghost have joined the list.

This means that you will want to prioritize using these types of Pokémon when battling any Psychic-type.

The reason for this is that these types will be able to use super-effective moves that others cannot.

If you want to do the most damage possible, you need one of these three types of Pokémon on your team.

However, an exception can be made for dual types so long as the Pokémon is capable of performing Bug, Dark, or Ghost-type attacks.

Psychic Type Pokémon Resistances

Along with their weaknesses, you will also need to keep in mind what Psychic types are resistant against.

The last thing you want to do is toss in one of the best bird Pokémon only to discover your attacks aren’t effective!

Psychic-type Pokémon resistances include:

  • Fighting
  • Psychic

Due to these resistances, you definitely do not want to use your own Psychic-type against a Psychic opponent, since your attacks won’t be effective.

What’s more, is that if you look at Fighting-type Pokémon weaknesses and resistances, you’ll notice that Psychic attacks weaken them.

Fighting types are the worst type to use against Psychic Pokémon, because you will end up doing less damage while receiving more that will drain your HP.

Best Counters For Psychic Type Pokémon

There are a lot of Pokémon that you could potentially use to counter a Psychic type, but some stand out more than others.

We recommend using Dark-type Pokémon whenever possible because they will weaken Psychic opponents while being unaffected by Psychic attacks.

However, you can also consider dual types like Sableye, a Dark/Ghost type that is immune to Psychic attacks but super effective against them.

Even Houndoom, one of the best dog Pokémon, could be an effective counter as a Dark/Fire-type that is resistant to Psychic damage.

The main thing you really need to be concerned about is whether or not the type of Pokémon you’re using is a type that Psychic is weak against.

Although using a type that is also resistant to Psychic attacks can be a major bonus.

What Beats Psychic Type Pokémon?

When you have to battle a Psychic-type Pokémon, you’ll need to make sure your team is set up appropriately.

This means adding and training Pokémon that can do a lot of damage to Psychic types quickly.

You also need to pay special attention to the types of moves your Pokémon are going to be using, as some will be more effective than others.

Don’t worry too much, though, because we’re here to give you some ideas about what your best options are when it comes time to take out a Psychic-type.

Pokémon To Use Against Psychic Types

Although there are many Pokémon you could use against a Psychic-type opponent, some are better than others.

The best Pokémon you can use include:

  • Shedinja (Bug/Ghost)
  • Lokix (Bug/Dark)
  • Umbreon (Dark)
  • Poochyena (Dark)
  • Mabosstiff (Dark)
  • Sableye (Dark/Ghost)
  • Duskull (Ghost)
  • Polteageist (Ghost)
  • Houndstone (Ghost)

If you’re able to add any of these Pokémon to your team, you will be much better suited for a battle against a Psychic type.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the exact Pokémon you add will depend on which of the best Pokémon games of all time you’re playing.

This is because not all Pokémon are available in every game, so you will have to check your Pokedex.

Moves To Use Against Psychic Types

Now that you know Pokémon to keep an eye out for, we can talk about moves that are super effective against Psychic types.

The best offensive moves to use include:

  • Snarl (Dark)
  • Crunch (Dark)
  • Bite (Dark)
  • Sucker Punch (Dark)
  • Dark Pulse (Dark)
  • Astonish (Ghost)
  • Shadow Sneak (Ghost)
  • Shadow Ball (Ghost)
  • Hex (Ghost)

These are the moves you are going to want to make sure your Pokémon know before battling a Psychic type.

Keep in mind that you may have to grab the TMs for some of these moves, while others some Pokémon may start off knowing.
