13. Assassin’s Creed – (2007)

Assassin’s Creed is the first installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, which was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft.

The game was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2007 and was playable on Microsoft Windows in 2008. It can also be played on Xbox One consoles, thanks to backward compatibility.

Assassin’s Creed follows the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and the Templars. The Assassins seek to obtain a world of peace, using free will, while the Templars prefer using control to achieve the same goal.

It takes place in a fictional history of real-world events, during the Third Crusade across the Holy Land, in the year 1191.

Players control Desmond Miles, the series protagonist, as he uses the “Aniums” to observe his genetic memories and address information about an ancient artifact known as the “Apple of Eden.”

If this artifact gets into the wrong hands, it could be used to control the minds of the innocent and wreak havoc across the land.

Upon release, Assassin’s Creed was met with positive reviews, with praise directed toward its storytelling, visuals, originality, and art design.

The game proved so popular that it went on to win several awards at E3 in 2006 and spawned the rest of the installments on this list.

 

12. Assassin’s Creed II – (2009)

Assassin’s Creed II is the sequel to 2007’s, Assassin’s Creed, and the second major installment in the series.

This action-adventure game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was released the following year for Microsoft Windows and OS X.

In this installment, the game is set in the 21st century. It follows the series protagonist, Desmond Miles, once again as he tries to decipher the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, one of his distant ancestors.

Players are tasked with guiding Ezio on a quest for vengeance against those who betrayed his family. You’ll work your way through the streets of 15th and early 16th, Italy, exploring cities like Florence, Venice, Tuscany, and Forli.

The more the game goes on, the more Desmond begins to understand the mysteries of the ancient race, known as the First Civilization.

Assassin’s Creed II received positive reviews upon release, for its narrative, characters, map design, visuals, and Renaissance setting.

Having sold over nine million copies to date, Assassin’s Creed II is considered to be one of the best video games ever made!

Much like the previous titles, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood continues with the battle between the Assassins and Templars, but this time takes place straight after the events of Assassin’s Creed II. 

Ezio Auditore da Firenze makes his return, and the story follows his efforts to restore the Assassin’s Order and defeat the Borgia family.

The game is set in an open-world environment and played from a third-person perspective.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood received critical acclaim from critics upon release, with praise directed toward its content, gameplay, and the addition of a multiplayer mode.

As well as winning multiple industry awards, Brotherhood also won a BAFTA award for “Best Action Game.”

It’s the direct sequel to Brotherhood and the fourth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series.

Revelations is set in an open-world environment and played from a third-person perspective. It follows the series protagonist, Desmond Miles, once again as he tries to relive the memories of his ancestors and find a way to stop the apocalypse.

The game features two additional returning protagonists: Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

This version continues the feud between the Assassins and Templars but is set during the 18th century, before, during, and after the American Revolution.

Desmond’s half-English, half-Mohawk ancestor, Ratonhnhaké: ton, or Connor as he’s more commonly known, does all he can to defend the colonies from the Templars whore consistently trying to gain control.

Players have free rain of the games open-world environment allowing total exploration of 18th-century Boston, New York City, and the American frontier.

The game is played from a third-person perspective, and players have the choice of either single-player or online multiplayer mode.

Assassin’s Creed III sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and was praised for its narrative, gameplay, visuals, and its cast of characters.

 

8. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – (2013)

The action-adventure game was developed by Ubisoft and published by Ubisoft Montreal for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

Set in the Caribbean in the 18th century, the story takes place during the Golden Age of Piracy and follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh pirate and grandfather and father of Ratonhnhaké:ton and Haythan Kenway, as he stumbles on the Assassins and Templars ongoing conflict.

Black Flag focuses more on the ship-based exploration of the open-world map, while also sticking with some land-based quests and combat from a third-person perspective.

Upon release, Black Flag was met with positive reviews, became one of the best-selling games of 2013, and received several awards and nominations.

 

7. Assassin’s Creed: Rogue – (2014)

It’s the seventh major installment in the series and is set between Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed III.

The story follows Shay Patrick Cormac, a former Assassin-turned-Templar who makes it his mission to hunt down former members of his Brotherhood in revenge for the betrayal they bestowed upon him.

The gameplay is similar to Black Flag and consists of ship-based naval exploration and some land-based third-person investigation.

Assassin’s Creed: Rogue received mixed reviews upon release, with praise directed toward its twist on the traditional narrative, naval warfare gameplay, and the complex protagonist.

 

6. Assassin’s Creed: Unity – (2014)

Assassin’s Creed: Unity is the eighth major installment in the series and the sequel to Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.

This time around, the game is set in Paris during the French Revolution and follows Arno Victor Dorian on his quest to reveal the real forces behind the Revolution.

Unity continues with the series’ third-person open-world style but introduces new combat, stealth, and parkour systems.

It’s the first game in the series to introduce cooperative multiplayer, allowing up to four players to collaborate on missions and explore the open-world environment.

The game was developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft in 2015 for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Syndicate is the ninth major installment in the series and is set in Victorian-era London.

Twin assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye work together to take back control of the city from the Templars by navigating their way through organized crime and doing whatever they can.

The game continues with an open-world design and allows players the opportunity to roam the streets of London from a third-person perspective, by foot or by carriage.

Due to the game’s overwhelming positive response from critics, Assassin’s Creed Unity was nominated for multiple industry awards. It became the ninth best-selling retail game in the UK in its second week of release.

 

4. Assassin’s Creed: Origins – (2013)

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is the tenth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and was released worldwide for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2017.

The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, published by Ubisoft, and is the successor to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. 

This installment follows the story of Bayek, a Medjay, and dives deep into the centuries-long conflict between the Assassins and Templars once more.

Bayek struggles to protect his people from widespread upheaval and ends up coming into contact with the very forces that are causing it, and, into the first Assassins.

Upon release, Origins was met with positive reviews from critics, who praised the game characters, story, voice acting, and reworked gameplay-systems.

Origins won the award for “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Real-time Project” at the 16th Visual Effects Society Awards in 2017.

 

3. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – (2018)

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the eleventh primary installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and the successor to Assassin’s Creed Origins. 

Odyssey was developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published worldwide by Ubisoft in 2018 for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

The game is set in the years 431-422 BCE and tells the tale of the Peloponnesian War, a mythological battle between Athens and Sparta.

In this installment, players get to choose between a male or female Greek mercenary, who fights for both the Spartans and the Athenians, as they’re trying to reconcile their differences and unite once again.

You’ll unlock new abilities and have access to several “special skills” once you fill-up the ability bar, due to the return of the hitbox combat system that first came to light in Origins. 

Upon release, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey received favorable reviews from critics and was praised for its open-world environment, engaging gameplay, and characters.

Since its debut, Odyssey has been nominated for several industry awards and won the “Best Artistic Design” award at the 2018 Titanium Awards.

 

2. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

The twelfth main installment in the AC series is Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, released in 2020 by Ubisoft.

Valhalla is set in the age of Vikings and takes place in a fictional setting of the British Isles. 

Players control Eivor Varinsdottir, a Viking raider attempting to build out a new Viking clan in England. His goal becomes increasingly difficult as he becomes entangled in the conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.

Valhalla also had its own DLC, Dawn of Ragnarök, which includes additional storyline content.

 

1. Assassin’s Creed: Mirage

The latest project by Ubisoft in the Assassin’s Creed series is Mirage. 

At the time of writing this update, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, doesn’t currently have a set release date, however, we do know it’ll be released sometime in 2023.

Mirage is set in the city of Baghdad, and unlike Valhalla, it will feature just one large city, instead of a wide-open world. Something that most AC fans will be happy about.

Players will control Basim, a street thief, suffering from nightmarish visions, and seeking answers.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s undoubtedly a great game to play, and one that we enjoy playing from time to time, but for now we’ll be sticking to Need for Speed, GTA, or Pokémon.
