Want to know how to play Far Cry 6 in co-op multiplayer? We got you!

If you’ve just picked up Far Cry 6, how to play co-op multiplayer is probably a big question on your mind, and we have to admit the process can be a bit confusing.

For one, the game never actually tells you how to play co-op multiplayer or host a co-op game.

This can leave a lot of players — rightfully — frustrated, and it’s definitely a bit of an oversight by Ubisoft.

Fortunately, if you want to take on Antón Castillo’s regime with your friends, we’ve got all the details you need to know about how co-op multiplayer works in Far Cry 6.

How To Unlock Co-Op Multiplayer Mode In Far Cry 6

Unlike many of the best multiplayer games of all time, you can’t just start up the game and start playing with a co-op partner. This is where many people end up getting confused because the option just doesn’t exist.

In order to be able to access co-op mode, Far Cry 6 requires players to first complete the introduction mission “Du or Die,” which sends players to Fort Quito to complete a couple of challenges.

This mission helps players get familiar with the mechanics of the game and how many challenges can be approached.

For example, players can take a direct or stealthy approach depending on their preferred playstyles.

Overall, the mission should take about an hour and a half to two hours to complete, after which you can activate co-op mode.

How To Play Far Cry 6 Co-Op Multiplayer

Once you complete “Du or Die,” a message should pop up telling you that you can now play co-op multiplayer.

To start co-op mode, navigate to the icon next to your Uplay profile icon in the main menu. Once you select it, you will be prompted to choose one of three options.

You can play with a friend, search for a partner online, or accept an offer to join another player’s game.

Unfortunately, Far Cry 6 co-op isn’t available for local multiplayer like many of the best Call of Duty games, so you can’t play locally with a friend on the same console, even if you’re using the best Nintendo Switch controllers.

There is also a limit of two players currently, though many fans hope this will be expanded in the future.

While playing co-op, either with a random partner or with a friend, you can progress through the main campaign, take on special missions, and earn Moneda that you can later spend at Lola’s Black Market.

How To Host A Co-Op Game

If you want to host a co-op game, you’ll want to select the “play with a friend” option in the co-op menu.

To ensure your game is only open to your friends, you’ll need to change your party privacy to “open to friends” in the game settings gameplay menu. You can also set it to “invite-only” if you want more exclusivity.

Once this is enabled, your friends or invited players can accept to join your game and help you in the supported game modes.

One of the best things about Far Cry 6 co-op is that, unlike many of the other best-selling PS4 games of all time, you aren’t limited to playing with certain friends if you own DLC that they don’t.

In fact, if you’re playing on the same family of consoles, you can even invite friends to play through the Far Cry 6 DLC content even if they don’t own it themselves.

This is a great feature that we definitely approve of, and it helps prevent the need for friends to buy all of the same content just to play together.

Really, the most challenging part of the process is trying to figure out who you want to play with most since you can only host one other player at a time.

Far Cry 6 Co-Op Special Operations Missions

Far Cry 6 Special Operations missions are available as both a single-player experience and a co-op multiplayer option.

They offer a good way to earn experience and rewards and play with friends without progressing through the main campaign.

To start a Special Operations mission, you’ll need to track down Lola Tafalla in one of the main guerrilla camps that you’ve unlocked and speak with her.

When Lola is interacted with, you will be prompted to select a mission and one of the three modes: single-player, add partner, and quick play, which gives you the option to play co-op multiplayer with a random player.

Once you select the mode you want, the mission will begin, and you can start earning rewards!

Keep in mind these missions, while tough, aren’t nearly as difficult as the hardest video game levels of all time.

So you don’t have to worry about them taking up a lot of your time, and you can definitely complete more than one easily in a single session.

Will Co-Op Players Retain Their Progress?

If you play co-op multiplayer with a friend and choose to progress through the main Far Cry campaign, it’s worth keeping in mind that only the host will have their progress saved.

Just like in the other best Far Cry games of all time, the joining player misses out on any saved progress since it doesn’t coincide with their own progression through single-player mode.

While this is a bit of a downer, it does make sense, and it’s par for the course when it comes to online multiplayer.

That said, when you join another campaign, you do get to keep any cash that you earn during that session, which you can then use in your own game.

We think that’s a good enough reward for being able to experience Far Cry 6 with your friends.

Summary

We hope this helped you understand how to unlock, host, and play Far Cry 6 multiplayer.

This is absolutely everything you need to know to start toppling Antón Castillo’s regime with your friends.

The hardest part will be deciding which friend you want to play with first!
