The Best Games Like Dragon Age

What are the best games like Dragon Age?

Dragon Age has become one of Bioware’s most iconic series, and with the release of the fourth game fast approaching, the hype is bigger than ever!

However, there is still a way to go before the next game’s release date, so to help pass the time, we’ve rounded up the best games like Dragon Age.

Sure, they won’t make DA: Dreadwolf come out any faster, but time flies when you’re having fun, so by playing these games, the wait will feel less daunting!

The 10 Best Games Like Dragon Age

When creating this list, we didn’t just want to focus on fantasy RPG titles and call it a day.

Instead, we selected similar games based on their gameplay, storytelling, characters, and mechanics.

So, before Solas rises to destroy us all, here’s our list of the 10 best games like Dragon Age:

10. Fable 2

Best Games Like Dragon Age Fable 2

Kicking off our list is Fable 2, a popular fantasy RPG from 2008 that revolves around a young hero destined to stop the end of the world.

The thing that makes Fable 2 stand out, and all the games in the series, is its distinctive, dry British humor that permeates the entire story.

It makes the world remarkably engaging, but it also has a very dynamic morality system and a world that changes based on your choices.

While both Fable 2 and Dragon Age have branching narratives, in Fable, you can really see your choices reflected as you explore.

For instance, if characters choose not to help the Temple of Light in Oak Field, the town and surrounding area will turn dark and dead.

Likewise, the world of Albion in Fable 2 is remarkably vast, providing a ton of unique areas for players to explore.

This game also gives players a ton of freedom to do basically anything they want, including being horribly evil.

With Fable 4, a reboot of the series, currently in development, now is the perfect time to check out this game if you haven’t already.

9. GreedFall

Best Games Like Dragon Age Greedfall

GreedFall is an action RPG set on a remote island that is being fought over by different nations looking to colonize it.

In this game, players control De Sardet, a noble from the Merchant Congregation who is dispatched to establish contact with the island’s native inhabitants.

However, while the game revolves around themes of colonialism and politics, it isn’t as straightforward as you may think.

It also has a fantastic real-time combat system that utilizes ranged, melee, and magical abilities that you can hone.

You also aren’t regulated to siding with a specific faction and can instead ally with the natives or any of the foreign powers.

The choices you make will also impact the world around you, as well as the relationships between different factions on the island.

Easily one of the best fantasy RPG games like Dragon Age, GreedFall has a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy!

8. Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Best Games Like Dragon Age Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect is another Bioware RPG series that has become one of their biggest hits since its release in 2007.

While Mass Effect Andromeda may have been a letdown for some fans, fortunately, the original trilogy has gotten a remaster!

The Legendary Edition compiles all three games from the original series and features improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, and bug fixes.

Like Dragon Age, the Mass Effect series has an extremely well-written story and a load of deep lore that really makes the world feel alive.

However, one thing that really makes it stand out is its companions, who are some of the most engaging and memorable in gaming history.

Crewmates like Tali, Garrus, and Wrex have become just as popular as Dragon Age companions Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana.

The Mass Effect trilogy is an absolute must-play for fans of DA, and it has all the Bioware RPG charm that you could hope for.

7. The Outer Worlds

Best Games Like Dragon Age The Outer Worlds

Created by RPG titans Obsidian Entertainment, best known for Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds is all about old-school role-playing.

Set in a dystopian future where mega-corporations have colonized space, players have a ton of freedom to create characters with a wide variety of skills.

What makes this game worth playing for Dragon Age fans is its choice-driven narrative, memorable companions, and vibrant world-building.

A bit like a mashup of Fallout and Mass Effect, The Outer Worlds is extremely fun to play through, and every world you visit offers new opportunities.

Like Dragon Age Origins, this game also has a very in-depth role-playing system that is reminiscent of old-school RPGs.

This allows players to create some really unique character builds with unique attributes, stats, flaws, and perks.

You can get extremely creative when making characters, something that a lot of modern RPGs have moved away from or limited.

So, if you’re a DA fan who is particularly fond of Origins, you’ll definitely want to check out this game for yourself!

6. Baldur’s Gate III

Best Games Like Dragon Age Baldurs Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate III entered early access for PC in 2020 and has finally gotten its full release, much to the delight of fans across the world.

This game is the pinnacle of fantasy RPGs and has quickly become one of the best video games of all time, thanks to its insane level of depth.

Based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop campaign, this world is set in the Forgotten Realms and features a complex narrative filled with moral dilemmas.

One thing that really makes this game stand out is its incredible character creation system, which is one of the most in-depth ever developed.

There are 11 races and 31 subraces you can choose from, each of which provides a range of unique character features.

You can also personalize your character’s backstory, class, skills, abilities, faction alignments, appearance, and personality.

As for combat, Baldur’s Gate III has a smooth, tactical turn-based combat system that allows you to interact with the environment in unique ways.

There are also opportunity attacks you can use, coordinated companion attacks, status effects, and even height advantages that can make a difference!

Seriously, Baldur’s Gate III thinks of everything, and you owe it to yourself as a Dragon Age fan to play it for yourself!

5. Neverwinter Nights

Best Games Like Dragon Age Neverwinter Nights

Developed by Bioware and Obsidian, Neverwinter Nights is another RPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, specifically the city of Neverwinter.

Like Baldur’s Gate, this RPG has a robust character customization system and a storyline that takes players through several different environments and dungeons.

The story revolves around investigating a deadly plague that’s ravaging the city, which leads to an even greater underlying threat.

Throughout the game, choices players make will impact how the story progresses, their character’s alignment and reputation, as well as the ending.

Moreover, actions and interactions will also impact companions’ loyalties and alignments, with some even potentially deciding to leave your party.

Making this game even more interesting is that it allows players to create their own custom campaigns and share them with others.

All of this user-created content has helped ensure that this game maintains a ton of replayability, and it is certainly one of our favorites.

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Best Games Like Dragon Age The Witcher 3

Of course, we have to mention The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a game that has won over 200 Game of the Year awards for its world design and unforgettable story.

While Geralt of Rivia has become one of the most popular video game characters of all time, it is the third game in his series where he truly shines.

Set in a huge open world, Wild Hunt revolves around Geralt trying to find his adoptive daughter Ciri who is being recently pursued by The Wild Hunt.

However, along the way, there is no shortage of monsters to slay, places to explore, and memorable characters to meet.

As Geralt, players can take on various contracts to hunt down monsters, many of which tasks players with investigating and preparing for the final confrontation.

This is definitely not a game where you can throw yourself at enemies and beat them into submission. No, you need to be smart about it!

Along with the combat, what really makes Witcher 3 great is its morally complicated decisions that can have unique effects on the world.

Although there are three main endings, each has multiple variations depending on the smaller choices you make throughout the game.

Overall, this fantasy RPG is considered one of the best for good reason, and it should definitely be considered a must-play for any Dragon Age fan.

3. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Best Games Like Dragon Age Divinity Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes place in the high-fantasy world of Rivellon, and players take on the role of Sourcerers, capable of harnessing a type of magic known as Source.

What we really like about this game is that, like Dragon Age Origins, it allows players to select unique origin stories for their characters.

These origins impact the game’s story and the interactions that characters can have with others in the world.

Because of this, the story of Original Sin 2 is anything but linear, and its branching narrative allows players to influence how events play out and how the story ends.

We also really like the mechanics of Source magic in this game and how you can use the powerful Source abilities to turn the tide of battles in your favor.

However, while Source magic is incredibly powerful, it is also dangerous, so you will have to weigh the pros and cons of using it.

There are also numerous other schools of magic to master, as well as melee and ranged combat skills that depend on your class.

If you want to shake things up, you can also try the best Divinity: Original Sin 2 mods, which make the gameplay even more engaging!

2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Best Games Like Dragon Age Kingdom Come Deliverance

Along with being one of the best medieval games to play, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is also a fantastic choice for Dragon Age fans.

Set in the medieval kingdom of Bohemia, what makes this game stand out from others is its emphasis on realism and immersion.

This game really goes above and beyond when it comes to depicting medieval life and warfare, and not even the smallest historical details have been spared.

Deliverance uses period-accurate language, realistic travel times, crafting based on historical practices, and extremely realistic environments.

Of course, players have to manage survival needs as well, including hunger, fatigue, health, and cleanliness.

The combat is also steeped in realism, with players having to learn how to use a variety of weapons effectively to overcome opponents.

So, you can’t just hack and slash with wild abandon, and you’ll also have to maintain your weapons and armor as they’ll degrade with use.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a bit like a hyperrealistic Dragon Age, only without the magic, and it is definitely a tough game.

However, we highly recommend trying it out for yourself, as it really is the best medieval RPG game you can play right now!

1. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Best Games Like Dragon Age Skyrim

Taking our number one spot is none other than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. A game that we’d be surprised to learn anyone hasn’t played yet!

Of course, we couldn’t resist giving this game top billing, as it really does have everything a Dragon Age fan could want and more.

If you don’t know by now, Skyrim gives the play the ability to become the Dragonborn, a character of any race destined to defeat the dragon Alduin.

However, what makes this game so great is that you can literally ignore the main quest for ages and just explore the world!

There is no shortage of side quests, and with the release of the Anniversary Edition, even more content has been added.

If you really want to add some Dragon Age flair, there are also a ton of mods for Skyrim that add things like Dragon Age companions, spells, and armor.

So, even if you’re playing this game, you can have Alistair, Morrigan, Fenris, Anders, or Solas following you along dutifully!

Skyrim is the perfect game to play while waiting for Dragon Age Dreadwolf to release, and with mods, it has truly limitless potential.

Plus, once Dreadwolf does release, it, in turn, gives you something great to play while waiting for Elder Scrolls VI, which is still a very long way off!
