Bug-Type Pokemon Weaknesses and Strengths

Bug-type Pokémon are the sixth most common in the series, so you’re likely to come across them sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, they aren’t too hard to beat in battle, and they have a number of weaknesses you can use against them.

In this guide, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about Bug-type weaknesses and resistances, as well as how you can counter them.

Bug Type Pokémon Weaknesses

With 18 different types of Pokémon, it’s not unusual to find yourself wondering, “What are Bug-type Pokémon weak against?” while battling a Caterpie that randomly appeared.

After all, it’s hard for anyone to remember what each type is weak against, even if you’ve been playing the series since the 90s.

Bug-type Pokémon are weak against:

  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Rock

This means that these types will be the best for dealing the most damage against them.

That said, Bug-type Pokémon have the lowest HP base stat total on average of all types, so any of the best bird Pokémon would fare well against them.

So, as long as you’re not using a type they are resistant to, it is fairly easy to deplete their HP, especially if you’re using a Pokémon with a high attack stat.

Bug Type Pokémon Resistances

While they do have some notable weaknesses, Bug-type Pokémon also have some resistances that you need to be aware of.

The last thing you want to do is use a Pokémon that a Big-type can resist. If you do, you will end up doing only half-damage in battle.

Bug-type Pokémon are resistant against:

  • Fighting
  • Grass
  • Ground

If you use any of these Pokémon, you won’t be dealing as much damage as you could be in battle.

Grass is especially bad to use against Bug-types since Bug-type moves can weaken them!

That said, you will want to avoid using any of these Pokémon when battling a Bug-type, and instead, stick with those it is weak or neutral against.

Best Counters For Bug Type Pokémon

If you are going to be fighting a Bug-type Pokémon, your best counters are going to be Fire, Flying, and Rock-types.

While Flying-type Pokémon weaknesses and resistances give them vulnerabilities to Electric, Ice, and Rock, they can pack a punch against Bug-types since they are resistant.

Fire-types like Fennekin, one of the best dog Pokémon, are also good to use since Fire-type attacks

That said, Rock-types like Gigalith, Rockruff, and Sudowoodo can also quickly take out any Bug-type in your way.

However, the exact Pokémon that you add to your team to counter a Bug-type is going to depend on the region you’re in and the Pokémon game you’re playing.

Just try to stick with these types whenever possible to be effective in battle!

What Beats Bug Type Pokémon?

There are a lot of Pokémon capable of taking down a Bug-type, but some will do a better job than others.

Along with the Pokémon you use, you should also consider specific super-effective moves that will do the most damage in battle.

To give you a better idea of what works best against Bug types, we’ve come up with some examples of the Pokémon and moves you should use against them.

Pokémon To Use Against Bug Types

Thanks to the weaknesses of Bug-types, there are some specific Pokémon that perform better against them.

When it’s time to take on a Bug-type, don’t just toss in one of the best fish Pokémon and hope for the best.

These are some of the best Pokémon to have on your side:

  • Charmander (Fire)
  • Arcanine (Fire)
  • Charizard (Fire/Flying)
  • Rookidee (Flying)
  • Aerodactyl (Rock/Flying)
  • Gigalith (Rock)
  • Rockruff (Rock)

If you can add even one of the Pokémon to your team, you will be set when facing a Bug-type.

However, you will want to make sure that the Pokémon you choose has the right moves lined up to use!

Moves To Use Against Bug Types

In a battle with a Bug-type, you’ll want to use moves that are super effective so that they do the most amount of damage possible.

Some of the best offensive moves to use include:

  • Fire Fang (Fire)
  • Flame Charge (Fire)
  • Flame Wheel (Fire)
  • Peck (Flying)
  • Drill Peck (Flying)
  • Air Slash (Flying)
  • Smack Down (Rock)
  • Rock Slide (Rock)
  • Stone Edge (Rock)

Each of these moves is super effective against Bug-type Pokémon and will allow you to take their HP down very quickly.

You will definitely want to teach some of these moves to your Pokémon if they don’t already know them!

Summary

Bug-type Pokémon may seem fairly weak, but they can do a lot of damage if you let your guard down.

You definitely don’t want to underestimate them during a fight, which is why you need to know how to take them down fast.
