Ground Type Pokemon Weaknesses and Strengths

Ground types are one of the best offensive Pokémon you can use, and they are the only type that is super effective against Electric.

However, when you’re fighting a Ground type, its offensive prowess can be devastating to your team if you aren’t prepared for the fight.

Fortunately, Ground-type Pokémon have their own set of weaknesses that you can use to turn the tide of battle.

If you’re having trouble fighting this type of Pokémon, keep reading to learn everything you need to know about their weaknesses and resistances.

Ground Type Pokémon Weaknesses

When battling this type of Pokémon, you’re not alone in wondering, “What are Ground-type Pokémon weak against?”

These guys are so strong that it can easily seem like nothing can bring them down.

Fortunately, they are not invincible, even if they can hit like a truck and dish out loads of super-effective attacks.

Ground-type Pokémon weaknesses are:

  • Grass
  • Water
  • Ice

These Pokémon also have no effect against Flying types unless the Flying Pokémon has lost its ungrounded status.

This means using some of the best bird Pokémon against them can be a solid tactic, despite Flying-type attacks not being super effective.

However, Pokémon like Cramorant, a Flying/Water type, and Hoppip, a Grass/Flying type, can be perfect due to their dual abilities.

That said, pure types of these Pokémon can be the best ones to use when facing off against a Ground type.

We’ll talk more about what specific Pokémon you should use against Ground types below.

Ground Type Pokémon Resistances

What helps make Ground-type Pokémon so formidable is their impressive resistances, which you need to know before you take one on.

Ground type Pokémon are resistant to:

  • Poison
  • Rock
  • Electric

These Pokémon are not only super effective against Electric types, but they are completely unaffected by Electric attacks.

Similarly, all Poison and Rock-type attacks will only do half damage against them.

Even many of the best snake Pokémon will do little against a pure Ground type, so you will want to keep these resistances in mind before battling one.

An argument could be made for using Pokémon like Bulbasaur, a Grass/Poison type, since it isn’t weak to Ground.

However, you would have to make sure to use only Grass-type attacks since Poison would do little during the battle.

Best Counters For Ground Type Pokémon

If you’re going to be taking on a Ground-type Pokémon, you need to have the right counters in your team if you want to stand a chance.

While Grass, Ice, and Water-type Pokémon are going to be the best choice, you can also consider dual-type Pokémon.

The way super-effective attacks work is based on the type of attack that you use.

Take Bulbasaur, for instance. While it can use Poison-type moves, you will want to use only its Grass-type attacks against a Ground-type.

Even though that type of Pokémon isn’t a pure Grass type, as long as you have it using the right moves, it can be super effective.

That being said, if you can have a pure Grass, Ice, or Water-type Pokémon on your team, we would definitely recommend using it as your go-to.

What Beats Ground Type Pokémon?

The last thing you want to do is start a fight with a Ground-type Pokémon that you can’t finish.

Fortunately, when it comes to beating Ground-types, there are many Pokémon that can get the job done.

However, to be as effective as possible against Ground types, you’ll need more than just the right type of Pokémon.

The moves you use are just as –if not more so — important, since that is how you will be dealing damage.

With the right team and the right moves, you will be able to take out any Ground-type that gets in your way easily.

Pokémon To Use Against Ground Types

Before you head over to take on the Ground-type Gym Leader, you should make sure you have the right Pokémon on your team.

Some of the best Pokémon you can use include:

  • Chikorita (Grass-type)
  • Treecko (Grass-type)
  • Snover (Grass/Ice-type)
  • Glaceon (Ice-type)
  • Snorunt (Ice-type)
  • Walrein (Ice/Water-type)
  • Squirtle (Water-type)
  • Kingler (Water-type)
  • Lampras (Water/Ice-type)

Some of the best fish Pokémon are also good candidates, like Basculin and Goldeen, since they are pure water types.

Truly, there are many great Pokémon you can use to take on Ground types, and these are only a handful of the best.

The one you end up relying on will depend on what game in the series you’re playing and what Pokémon you can catch at your current level.

Moves To Use Against Ground Types

As we talked about earlier, it is the type of moves you use that are going to be your main damage dealers.

This means you need to give serious consideration to what your Pokémon learn before taking on a Ground type.

Some of the best offensive moves to use include:

  • Razor Leaf (Grass)
  • Mega Drain (Grass)
  • Leafage (Grass)
  • Ice Shard (Ice)
  • Frost Breath (Ice)
  • Blizzard (Ice)
  • Water Pulse (Water)
  • Aqua Tail (Water)
  • Bubble Beam (Water)

If you’re able to use any of these moves in battle, you can quickly deal a devastating amount of damage against any Ground-type on the field.

Similarly, if you’re currently using a Ground-type Pokémon in one of the best Pokémon games of all time, you’re not going to want to be on the receiving end of these!
