The Best OSRS F2P Mage Gear

What is the best F2P mage gear in OSRS?

There are a lot of mage armor options in Old School Runescape, but the majority of these are limited to members only.

However, that doesn’t mean that F2P players are left high and dry, as there are still a few must-have pieces in the game.

Today, we’re looking at the best mage gear in OSRS F2P, so get ready to grab your character some new swag!

The Best F2P Mage Gear in OSRS

If you specialize as a mage in Old School Runescape but are a F2P player, your armor options are a bit limited.

While the selection isn’t huge, the gear we’ve chosen for this list has the best magic bonuses in the game for free players.

So, get your spellbook ready, and let’s dive into our list of the best F2P mage gear in OSRS:

6. Zamorak Monk Top

OSRS Best F2P Mage Gear Zamorak Monk Top

Kicking off our list, we have the Zamorak monk top, which is part of a full set of robes.

Pieces of the Zamorak Robe set can be dropped by Disciples of Iban, Monks of Zamorak, and necromancers.

As one of the best mage armor pieces in OSRS, the Zamorak monk top is usually worn by mages in the Wilderness.

This is because it provides a decent magic and prayer bonus and is easy to replace if it gets lost.

In terms of stats, this top provides a +2 magic attack bonus, along with a +3 magic defense and +3 prayer bonus.

The easiest way to get this top is by hunting down Monks of Zamorak, and they can be found in many locations.

One of the best places to find them is on the first floor of the Chaos Temple, where six of them will spawn.

This temple is located north of Falador and northwest of the Goblin Village. Although the second floor is locked, the first floor isn’t.

The monks located here only have a combat level of 17, making them fairly easy to take out for their gear.

Alternatively, you can purchase this top on the Grand Exchange for around 895 coins.

5. Blue Wizard Hat

OSRS Best F2P Mage Gear Blue Wizard Hat

The blue wizard hat is one of the best mage helms in OSRS, and it is definitely worth grabbing as a F2P player.

This low-armor hat provides a small magic attack and defense bonus that makes it useful for magic users.

While it only offers +2 in these stats and no additional bonuses, this hat pairs well with other pieces of mage gear.

There are a couple of ways to get the blue wizard hat for yourself, including Betty’s Magic Emporium, located in Port Sarim.

You can also find it on the Grand Exchange for around 660 coins, though it is cheaper to buy it from Betty’s.

Alternatively, it can sometimes be dropped by imps and wizards or looted from the beginner’s reward casket and elaborate lockbox.

If blue isn’t quite your color, you can also use dye to turn this hat into a black wizard hat.

This black variant can also be purchased from Betty’s for the same price as the blue hat, though it has the same stats.

Ultimately, which one you decide to use will depend on your specific color preferences!

4. Zamorak Monk Bottoms

Up next, we have the Zamorak monk bottoms, the second half of the full set of Zamorak monk robes.

However, unlike the Zamorak top, these bottoms are the best-in-slot for F2P magic legwear, making them very desirable.

In terms of stats, these monk bottoms provide a +2 magic attack bonus and a +3 to magic defense.

It also comes with a +3 to prayer, the same as the top piece of this set, which can be useful for players relying on this skill.

Like the Zamorak monk top, these bottoms are best looted from Monks of Zamorak in the Chaos Temple.

That said, these monks also spawn in a cage under the Varrock Castle stairs, and you can usually find at least one there.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to hunt down monks, you can buy the Zamorak monk bottoms on the GE for 3k coins.

While they aren’t one of the rarest drops in OSRS, buying these bottoms outright is definitely the easiest way to get them.

3. Wizard Robe

Wizard robes are up next, and they are the most basic piece of mage gear you can find in OSRS.

This robe is often worn with the blue wizard hat and blue wizard skirt for aesthetics, as they all belong to the same set.

As for stats, the wizard robes provide a +3 to magic attack and defense, but no other bonuses.

Unlike other pieces of mage gear on this list, these can be crafted with a crafting skill of 1 and a black robe and blue dye.

However, once created, they can be dyed to become black wizard robes, which is useful if you’re wearing the black wizard hat.

Alternatively, you can buy this robe on the Grand Exchange for 1.1k coins, though it isn’t available to buy anywhere else.

That said, it is possible to find it as a drop from Wizards and the elaborate lockbox inside the Camdozaal Vault.

This vault can be found in the Ruins of Camdozaal, an underground city located beneath Ice Mountain.

If you’re a F2P magic user in Old School Runescape, we highly recommend grabbing these robes as soon as you can!

2. Amulet of Magic

OSRS Best F2P Mage Gear Amulet of Magic

Next up is one of the best amulets in OSRS, the amulet of magic, and it is something you shouldn’t pass up!

When worn, this amulet provides a magic attack bonus that can help make your character more effective in combat.

It is one of the cheapest and most common amulets in Old School Runescape because of how easy it is to create.

The amulet of magic comes with a +10 magic attack bonus, which is substantial when paired with the other gear on this list.

It is also the highest magic attack bonus that you can find as a F2P player specializing in magic.

To make this amulet for yourself, you will need a couple of items, including a sapphire amulet, a cosmic rune, and a water rune.

You will also need to have a level 7 magic skill to use the level-1 enchant spell needed in this amulet’s creation.

Sapphire amulets can either be smithed with a level 24 crafting skill, or they can be purchased on the GE for roughly 500 coins.

As for the water and cosmic runes, we would recommend buying them to save time, as they are fairly affordable.

However, a cosmic rune will spawn south of the gate on the Frozen Waste Plateau if you want to grab one for free.

Similarly, water runes will spawn in the same location, as well as Al Kharid Mine and the Dark Warriors’ Fortress.

Once you have all of these components, you can use the level-1 enchant spell on them to create an amulet of magic.

Of course, if you’re in a rush, you can just purchase one from the GE for around 547 coins.

1. Byrophyta’s Staff

OSRS Best F2P Mage Gear Bryophyta's Staff

Taking our number one spot as the best mage gear in OSRS is Byrophyta’s staff!

Requiring a level 30 in attack and magic to equip and use, this is one piece of gear you shouldn’t pass up.

This staff is created using a battlestaff and Byrophyta’s essence with a level 62 crafting skill.

What makes this staff stand out is that it boasts the highest magic attack and defensive stats of any item in F2P.

In terms of stats, it has a magic attack and defense bonus of +15, as well as a +10 stab and +40 crush attack bonus.

Its defensive stats are also impressive, boasting +2 stab, +3 slash, and +1 crush defensive bonuses.

If that wasn’t enough, this staff also comes with a strength bonus of +50, allowing any mage to become more formidable.

What’s more, is that this staff can be charged with up to 1k nature runes, and it has a 1/15 chance of not consuming a charge when used.

So, if you cast spells that use nature runes, this staff can be incredibly useful as it has the potential to save a lot of runes.

Although this item is incredibly useful, it can also be very costly to create or buy, so it is something to work towards.

If you don’t have the crafting skill to make it yourself, you can bring Byrophyta’s essence and 50k coins to Zaff.

Zaff can be found in his shop, Zaff’s Superior Staves in Varrock, and with the essence and money, he can make it for you.

Alternatively, you can purchase Byrophyta’s staff on the Grand Exchange, though it will cost you 7 million coins!
